Characterised by their sweet yet acidic flavour, blueberries are more than a tasty yoghurt topping.
Packed with fibre, vitamins and antioxidants, the small fruits can support several aspects of your health.
What’s more, these nutrients can reduce back pain by alleviating inflammation, which can lead to chronic pain.
Worryingly, back pain is a common problem that affects around four in five Britons, leaving many backs across the country sore.
However, eating antioxidant-rich foods could soothe symptoms of pain, according to a doctor.
A chiropractor from Illinois has taken to TikTok to explain how eating blueberries could stave off back pain.
Dr Jeff Winternheimer posted a video sharing that blueberries are the ideal food to eat if you want to avoid an achy back.
The doctor explained that the berries’ antioxidant and vitamin content can help reduce inflammation as well as the painful symptom.
“The number one food that you need to eat every day if you have back pain is blueberries,” he said in the video.
The doctor isn’t the only one to back the effects of blueberries on pain as a study, published in the journal Nutrients, also confirmed this claim.
The findings suggested that daily blueberry consumption could reduce pain, stiffness, and difficulty to perform daily activities in people with osteoarthritis.
Another small research found that the blue fruits could speed up muscle recovery after intense leg exercises, leading to less pain.
Furthermore, blueberries can also boost your health through neutralising free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and increase your risk of chronic diseases.
The good news is that they are also low in calories, with one cup containing just 84 calories.
