NEW DELHI: Indian opener Shubman Gill is progressing well in his recovery from dengue fever, which had forced him to miss India’s opening match of the ODI World Cup against Australia. Although he may also sit out the game against Afghanistan, he is set to travel with the team to Delhi and is not planning to return to his home in Chandigarh for rest.
A source informed ANI, “Shubman Gill is recovering and he will be traveling with the team to Delhi. He will be with the team and is not likely to go to his home in Chandigarh for rest. We hope that he will be back on the field before the match against Pakistan, and playing against Afghanistan will depend on his next medical report.”

Ishan Kishan replaced Gill in the lineup for India’s first match against Australia. The Australian team chose to bat first after winning the toss, with Mitchell Marsh and David Warner as openers. Warner and Steven Smith forged a crucial 69-run partnership for the second wicket, but once Smith was dismissed, Australia struggled against India’s bowling attack.

India’s spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin performed impressively, dismissing Australia for 199. Jadeja took three wickets, while Kuldeep and Jasprit Bumrah each claimed two. Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Ashwin each took one wicket in the match.

Will the ODI World Cup set Shubman Gill on the path to greatness?

In India’s innings, they faced early setbacks as Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed for ducks, leaving India at 2/3. However, Virat Kohli (85 runs from 116 balls) and KL Rahul (97* runs from 115 balls) anchored a solid 165-run partnership, guiding India to a six-wicket victory over Australia.
India’s next ODI World Cup match is against Afghanistan on October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Gill’s availability for that match will depend on his medical progress.
