Griff veered across Veight in the final 50m, which threw up the possibility of a protest.
But despite a lengthy delay, there was no protest.
Favourite Steparty finished third.
“He was very quick out of the gates last time. All the smarties say that that wasn’t the correct form going into the Guineas but it didn’t look like there was a lot of pressure,” trainer Cairon Maher told Channel 7.
“We drew wide so I was like let’s roll the dice.
“It did look very comfortable. Probably his price, they left him alone a bit. Fantastic. Great job.
“He was up here in Sydney. He was running very well. Since he has gone to Melbourne things have just gone right for them. Third win in a row.”
Earlier, Alligator Blood ($3.20) showed his class with a stunning win in the Group 1 Might and Power Stakes (2000m).
The Gai Waterhouse-trained star took the lead on the home straight and cruised to victory – the seventh Group 1 success in his career.
Vow And Declare stormed home for second, while Duais completed the top three.
“He just did it so easily,” Waterhouse told Channel 7 after the race.
“He’s a tough, elite racehorse and we’re privileged to see a racehorse like him.”
