RAIPUR: Asserting that a caste census is the X-ray of the nation, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said on Monday that if his party forms the government at the Centre, it will prioritise and conduct a caste census, extending benefits to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) based on the data.
Highlighting the Chhattisgarh government’s Awas Nyaya Sammelan, aimed at providing housing to the poor under its ambitious scheme ‘Gramin Awas Nyay Yojana’ in Bilaspur, the Congress MP accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of concealing the data from the caste census conducted by the UPA-led Congress government.
The former Congress chief also questioned PM Modi‘s “apprehensiveness” about a caste census and emphasised that the census would bring transparency and equal distribution of benefits among OBCs, Dalits, women, the general category, and others.
The Wayanad MP also claimed that the country is not governed by MLAs or MPs but by secretaries and cabinet secretaries.
Rahul Gandhi said out of a total of 90 secretaries in the Modi government, only three are from the OBC category, representing just 5% of the total Union budget.
Responding to BJP’s claim that it has 30-40% representation from OBC in assemblies and parliament, the Congress leader said in such a case the caste census should not be the issue for the saffron party.
Raising a remote he had used to transfer funds to beneficiaries under the Gramin Awas Nyay Yojana, Rahul Gandhi pointed out the “difference” between the remote used by Congress and the one used by PM Modi.
While alleging that the Prime Minister operates his remote control behind the scenes, favouring specific business interests, he questioned the government’s relationship with corporate figures like Gautam Adani.
Rahul Gandhi claimed that several poll promises, including waiving farmers’ loans, reducing electricity bills by half, and ensuring a minimum support price of Rs 2,500 per quintal for agricultural produce, were fulfilled by his party in the first cabinet of the state government.
Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress party has successfully implemented the Kisan Nyay Yojana, providing Rs 21,000 crore in input subsidies to farmers in Chhattisgarh. Additionally, Rs 7,000 per year was provided to those without land.
He said for the housing scheme approximately Rs 1,200 crore has been disbursed, with a commitment to transfer Rs 8,500 crore to beneficiaries’ accounts over the next five years.
The Congress leader also reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to tribal welfare, including ensuring a minimum support price for forest produce and the effective implementation of the Forest Rights Act.
