50 Top Pizza has released its annual list of the world’s top pizzerias and named a sole Bay Area winner.
San Francisco’s Tony’s Pizza Napoletana claimed the No. 19 spot on a list of the top 100 pizzerias around the world. Tony’s was among a fraction of U.S. pizzerias in the ranking and the only California restaurant recognized in the roundup.
50 Top Pizza celebrated Tony’s Pizza Napoletana chef-owner Tony Gemignani for mastering the techniques behind preparing a range of pies that includes styles from Neapolitan to New York.
“Tony Gemignani is a sure and traditional reference point for those who are seeking a high-quality pizza in the United States of America,” 50 Top Pizza wrote. “Great attention is put into detail and, above all, the leavening time for all types of pizza.” The organization highly recommended two pizzas: the Uncle Vito, with caramelized onions, ricotta, bacon and pesto, which is in the Classic American section of Tony’s menu, and the Capodimonte, topped with mozzarella, dried tomatoes and basil, in the Napoletana section.
In June, Tony’s claimed the No. 4 spot in 50 Top Pizza’s U.S. ranking, while his Las Vegas restaurant Pizza Rock ranked No. 18. In recognition of these accolades, Gemignani was honored with the award for performance of the year in the world ranking. He also won the best performance award in the U.S. ranking, for having two restaurants in the same category.
