Public transport fares in NSW will increase next month however the state government says it will cut fares on Fridays to make up for the hike.
The increase will take effect from Monday, October 16, with fares across the Opal network rising by an average of 3.7 per cent — which the NSW government said is less than $1 extra a week on average.
Peak fare rises include:

- Parramatta to Central will jump from $5.42 to $5.72
- Penrith to the CBD will increase from $7.24 to $7.65
- Chatswood to North Sydney will increase from $3.79 to $4
There will be no changes to the weekly travel cap, however half-price trips after eight journeys will stop when the change comes into effect.
According to the state government, almost 90 per cent of passengers don’t reach the cap.
Instead, Friday fares will be made cheaper, with passengers to receive a 30 per cent discount on Metro, train, bus and light rail services.
Adult commuters will be able to travel all day for a maximum cost of $8.90 while children, youth and concession fares will be capped at $4.45.
The NSW government said it has ”worked to relieve cost-of-commuting pressures” by delaying the increases — which usually kick in at the start of each financial year — and by ensuring they were less than the more recent Sydney Consumer price index movement.
“Every weekend will soon be a long weekend when it comes to Opal fares, as we make Friday travel cheaper for everyone — trimming the cost of visiting the city be it for work, to shop or to enjoy a day and night out on the town,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said.
