List of participating filmakers
Jio MAMI and Apple have selected 5 filmmakers who represent the new generation of Indian cinema. The list includes — Archana Atul Phadke, Faraz Ali, Prateek Vats, Saurav Rai and Saumyananda Sahi. These young filmmakers will be mentored by Vishal Bhardwaj who recently shot his award-winning short film ‘Fursat’ on iPhone, highly acclaimed writer, director and producer Vikramaditya Motwane, and Rohan Sippy who is known for his stylised films. These mentors will help these creators to push the boundaries of filmmaking using new technologies.
Commenting on this, Anupama Chopra, Festival Director of Jio MAMI, said, “Cinema worldwide is going through a tectonic change, and it’s wonderful to see filmmakers experiment with different formats of storytelling. We are thrilled to announce Jio MAMI Select—Filmed on iPhone—to empower young and emerging filmmakers to tell stories that they are passionate about. Can’t wait to see all the incredible things that these filmmakers do with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and MacBook Pro.”
The short films will premiere in April 2024 at a special screening event in association with Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. The short films will be available to be viewed on Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival’s YouTube channel following the premiere.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie shot on iPhone 14 Pro
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Bollywood-style musical “Fursat” is shot entirely on iPhone 14 Pro.
Commenting on his experience, Bhardwaj said: “A traditional film camera comes with 10 people, 3 attendants and 10 boxes of lenses, you can’t move around. You can’t be quick. iPhone liberated me in that sense. Action mode was the biggest surprise for me. In Fursat, we’ve covered a lot of things in Action mode. If you see the raw footage, the visual is so jarring and destabilised. In action mode, it’s so smooth. You have to see it to believe it. I’ve never had this kind of scale in my films ever before. This can tell you about the scale the iPhone can achieve. As a device, it’s taking you out of the limitations which we had when we were growing up. We didn’t have the luxury which the iPhone is providing every budding filmmaker today.”
