GM jumpstarts Hummer as 2022 GMC electric supertruck

GM’s hulking, military-inspired Hummers enjoyed unrivaled international cachet until the squared-away SUVs ran into the one-two punch of soaring gas prices and the Great Recession some 13 years ago. The General pulled the plug on Hummer in 2010.

Fast-forward a decade. General Motors is resurrecting the Hummer as a sub-brand of GMC — this time as all-battery pickups and SUVs. GM’s “professional grade” division’s already sparked interest in its nascent EV lineup with the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1, a supertruck bristling with three motors dishing out 1,000 horsepower, 11,000 lb.-ft. of torque (that’s not a typo, just GM’s marketing) and a range of at least 350 miles on a full charge.

Though the beast is massive, GMC says the $112,595 Hummer EV Edition 1 will knock out 0-60 mph times in about 3 seconds flat. It’ll be loaded with goodies like GM’s Super Cruise assisted-driving system, 35-inch-diameter Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires on 18-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, removable transparent roof panels, plenty of armor and cameras and a six-function MultiPro tailgate.

GMC opened reservations for the 2022 Hummer EV last month. Reportedly, it took just 10 minutes before all available slots of the limited run Edition 1 were snapped up. Expected to land in showrooms late next year, the launch version will be followed in the fall of 2022 by a $99,995 Hummer EV3X two-motor variant, an $89,995 EV2X in spring, 2023 and a $79,995 EV2 in the spring of 2024.
