A Fresno City College instructor who was ousted three years ago as the school’s basketball coach is now under investigation for allegedly threatening to shoot students and the college chancellor.
Ed Madec, 51, was arrested Friday, Oct. 13, on suspicion of criminal threat and threatening a college official, said an announcement from the State Center Community College District’s police department.
The allegations concern statements he allegedly made while teaching a class on Aug. 15, in the second week of the fall term, the police said. He was put on leave when administrators received reports of those statements.
The campus police announcement gave few details, saying that Madec “allegedly made threats against College Officials and Students in general, stating that he would shoot them.”
The student newspaper the Rampage said that the official threatened was the district chancellor, Carole Goldsmith, and that Madec “indicated the bullet points on his PowerPoint presentation were bullets ‘flying’ toward his students.”
Madec posted bail and was released from Fresno County Jail on Friday. The campus police said officials are “deeply concerned that the alleged suspect may pose a serious and ongoing threat to Fresno City College students and staff,” and asked that anyone who sees him on campus call 911 to report his presence.
Madec was from 2006 to 2020 the coach of Fresno City College’s men’s basketball team, which won 14 consecutive conference championships and two state championships during that time. In February 2020, he was put on leave as coach amid allegations that he had violated athletic association rules by providing special privileges to his players, including housing at less than fair market value in properties that he owned, as well as clothing, snacks and “excessive team meals.”
After an investigation by the California Community College Athletic Association, the team was placed on probation for four years because of the violations, and players who received impermissible benefits were declared ineligible.
While a lawsuit over his ouster made its way through the courts, Madec continued to teach physical education and recreation classes at the college. He was hired last season to coach basketball at Buchanan High School in Clovis but resigned after eight games, citing family issues, the Fresno Bee reported.
