Emily Blunt says she is “appalled” over a 2012 interview in which she called her server at Chili’s “enormous.”
Blunt was promoting her 2012 film Looper on Britain’s Jonathan Ross Show when the host asked about her experience filming the movie in America.

“If you go to Chili’s, you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous,” Ross said at the time. “I ordered a starter once and it was four mini-burgers and they were as big as proper burgers.”
“Well, the girl who was serving me was enormous. I think she got freebie meals at Chili’s,” Blunt replied as she recounted their jokey exchange.

The old clip went viral on social media, with one person writing, “Emily Blunt being blatantly fatphobic wasn’t on my 2023 bingo card but here we are.”
“Imagine being a server on your feet all day and you meet a celebrity who you like and admire and have what you think is a really cool and pleasant interaction and you see her the next day on TV calling you enormous,” another critic swiped.
“Imagine that waitress who was so excited about meeting Emily Blunt, only to watch this and realize that Emily is body shaming her,” a third detractor remarked.
“Emily Blunt seriously was one of my fave actresses but turns out she’s a fatphobic unfunny mean girl who thinks it’s funny to point out the size of a server when it adds nothing to the story – for shame,” a fourth added.

Blunt, who we have interviewed over here at the Sun and found to be a pleasure to talk to, apologized for her insensitivity saying her “jaw was on the floor” when she re-watched the clip.
“I just need to address this head-on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago,” Blunt said in a statement to PEOPLE on Friday. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
Blunt, who was most recently seen onscreen in Oppenheimer, continued, “I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it.”

The mother of two — who is married to John Krasinski — concluded her message by adding that she’s “sorry for any hurt caused” and admitting, “I was absolutely old enough to know better.”
On social media, fans applauded Blunt for her apology, with one person writing, “It’s important to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes.”
Meanwhile, other supporters lashed out at keyboard warriors trying to get the actress cancelled.
“I’m sorry, y’all are after Emily Blunt for a fatphobic comment from ELEVEN years ago?” one person asked, with another adding, “What on earth is this nonsense? It was a throwaway comment made 11 YEARS AGO for goodness sake.”
