BMW India’s upward streak: 48% luxury EV market share, iX1 sold out in 180 minutes!

The Indian automotive industry is expected to cross 4 million in sales in 2023 and high-end luxury brands are seeing growing demand as well. Among the most sought-after brands, is BMW India and its portfolio of both ICE and all-electric cars. The numbers show that the carmaker has maintained its upward streak in the month of September 2023. Since January, BMW India reports that they have sold 9,580 cars and 6,778 motorcycles across its BMW cars and MINI brands and BMW Motorrad.

Earlier, BMW Group India had reported its best-ever H1 sales and has continued its growth into H2 of 2023 as well. While BMW cars and Mini reported a 10 percent growth over 2022, BMW Motorrad has seen a growth of 26 percent when compared to Jan-Sep 2022. While the entry-level X1 is driving sales among new customers, flagship models such as the 7-series, i7, X7 and XM have seen a demand growth of 102 percent Y-o-Y over 2022.

Leading brand in luxury EV segment:
Since January 2023, BMW has launched several all-electric models in the country and currently has an extensive BEV portfolio. The latest BEV launched in India was the iX1 SUV, the electric counterpart of its popular X1 model. With the help of a diversified electric portfolio, BMW is currently commanding 48 percent of the luxury EV market in India, with over 1,000 BEVs delivered to customers. The interest in BMW EVs is further made clear by the fact that entire allocations for the iX1 SUV for India, got sold out in just 180 minutes on launch day.

The considerable growth of 26 percent in BMW Motorrad motorcycles, mainly came from accessible models such as the BMW G 310 R, G 310 RR and G 310 GS. These motorcycles contributed to 88 percent of sales since January 2023. Among the CBU models, the GS Adventure models continued to receive good demand with overall sales crossing 10,000 in India since launch. The sports segment also saw favourable demand among the S1000 RR, M1000 RR and M1000 R models.
