NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli made his 35th birthday memorable by smashing a century against South Africa during the World Cup match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. Kohli’s hundred holds remarkable significance as he equalled Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of 49 tons.
Kohli reached this milestone in 119 balls, comprising 10 fours. It took him 277 innings to achieve his 49th century at this level, whereas Tendulkar required 438 innings to accomplish the same feat.
After Kohli’s record-equalling effort, Tendulkar wasted no time as he took to X to extend his wishes.The master blaster jokingly said it took a year for him from 49 to 50 (referring to his age) but hopes Kohli would break his record in the coming days.
“Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!”, Sachin posted.

Kohli’s 101 not out was the centrepiece of unbeaten tournament hosts India’s 326-5 in their 50 overs.
Together with Shreyas Iyer (77) he shared a third-wicket partnership of 134 after India captain Rohit Sharma (40) had won the toss on what turned out to be a tricky pitch.
A barrage of wishes started to arrive for Kohli after India’s innings.
