Five mysterious roads where gravity pulls your car uphill with the engine off

We all know that to propel our cars towards a specific direction we need an internal combustion engine or an electric motor as a power source. However, Mother Nature is amazing and at some locations, a vehicle does not need its engine or motor to move forward. Here are are five such unique destinations, where having no power does not mean that your car will remain stationary as gravity here works in a mysterious way and can even pull a car uphill.

1. Magnetic Hill, Ladakh, India:
Located in the beautiful landscape of Ladakh, the Magnetic Hill of India is actually an optical illusion. Due to the landscape around the hill, the vehicles on the patch of road seem to be moving up hill despite being turned off. In reality, the surrounding slopes create an optical illusion of the hill road being at an inclination, the road is actually down hill and a neutral vehicle can catch speeds of up to 20 kmph on the patch.

2. Magnetic Hill, Southern Australia:
Located near the Black Rock in Souther Australia, the Magnetic Hill of Orroroo is famous for making vehicles feel like they are getting pulled up hill. However, once again the phenomenon at the site is nothing but an optical illusion, similar to what we see in Ladakh. The road is in reality down hill but seems like it is going up hill.
3. Mount Aragats, Armenia:
Mount Aragats is situated in Armenia and has been gaining notoriety among curios travellers as another ‘gravity hill’ on earth. Travellers have reported witnessing their vehicles roll up hill when they are in neutral and the brakes are off. However, while there are countless myths about what’s behind this phenomenon, the simple answer is again the absence of a horizon which creates on up hill optical illusion.

4. Hoover Dam, United States:
While cars do tend to move without power over Hoover Dam, this one is not an optical illusion. The dam is built as a curved gravity structure where the river and the dam’s shape create such a powerful updraft of wind, that vehicles start to move on their own.

5. Spook Hill, United States:
Situated in Central Florida, the Spook Hill is another famous ‘gravity hill’ that has many legends and folk lore surrounding it because vehicles seem to move uphill here without any propulsion. However, once again, the simple explanation here is the optical illusion that gets created due to the unique landscape and horizon of the spot.
