In 2014, Maruti Suzuki introduced India’s first-ever Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) or as the automaker calls it, the Automatic Gear Shift (AGS) system with its Celerio hatchback and the trend has since caught on. With an AMT gearbox, carmakers are able to offer the convenience of an automatic at a much more affordable price point than conventional automatic gearboxes. The popularity of the 5-speed AGS has grown since the Celerio and today it is offered in multiple Maruti Suzuki cars including the Alto K10, WagonR, Dzire, Baleno and even the newly launched Fronx SUV.

Overall, Maruti Suzuki has cross a major milestone by selling over 10 lakh automatic cars in India since 2014. The automaker further reports that 65 percent of automatic cars sold today, feature the AGS transmission. The carmaker’s automatic transmission arsenal has also grown over the years. Today it offers 5-speed AGS, 4-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters and electronic-Continuous Variable Transmission (e-CVT) options across 16 of its cars in different segments. While the AGS accounts for the lions share among these automatics, the 4-speed and 6-speed automatics account for 27 percent and the e-CVT accounts for 8 percent of the overall share.

Speaking on the 10 lakh automatics milestone, Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, said, “MSIL’s automatic car sales have been on the rise constantly. We are already close to touching the one lakh automatic vehicle sales mark for FY23-24, as we stand in the middle of the financial year. This is truly a tremendous feat for us. It is worth noting that NEXA customers tend to prefer high-end automatic variants. Arena customers meanwhile prefer mid-variants when making a purchase decision. As things stand today, NEXA accounts for about 58% of automatic car sales at MSIL, while Arena contributes about 42%.”
