One stat that tells the story of each NFL team at the quarter-season mark

Roughly a quarter of the way into the football calendar, we’ve got two teams still undefeated, one squad without a win, and a lot more to learn about what these 32 clubs are capable of.

But we’re starting to see some trends emerge. Though five weeks still makes a relatively small sample size, we’re beginning to get a real sense of what each team is all about — and why they might do as the season progresses.

With that in mind, we’re looking around the league and zeroing in on a stat or two that most accurately tells the tale of each team’s season so far.

AFC EAST

Miami Dolphins (4-1): All five of the fastest foot speeds reached by ball carriers this season have been posted by Miami Dolphins, headlined by Tyreek Hill’s 64-yard run after catch in Week 5 that saw him become the first player this season to hit a speed north of 22 miles per hour. It’s no wonder Miami leads the league yards per game (513.6) and total touchdowns (24) this season.

Buffalo Bills (3-2): Josh Allen’s top two receiving weapons, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, have the two highest touchdown totals in the league so far. Diggs is tied with Miami’s Tyreek Hill and Chicago’s D.J. Moore with five TDs, followed by Gabe Davis with four.

New York Jets (2-3): When Zach Wilson gets the ball out quickly, like he did against Kansas City in Week 4’s epic performance, good things happen. That’s still a work in progress, though — Wilson’s average time to throw sits at 3.05 seconds, which makes him the fourth slowest to release in the league.

New England Patriots (1-4): The Patriots are averaging a league-low 11 points per game, their offensive struggles on full display in Weeks 4 and 5 — the two worst losses of Bill Belichick’s head coaching career, in which New England posted just three points combined.

NFC EAST

Philadelphia Eagles (5-0): The Tush Push, now aptly named the Brotherly Shove, is gaining momentum. While other clubs try — and fail — to implement it, Philly’s Week 5 win saw them pull off the move a whopping six times, including three times in their final drive to drain the clock. The undefeated Eagles are just showing off at this point.

Dallas Cowboys (3-2): The Cowboys know no middle ground, either blowing out opponents by a combined 108-13 or being blown out by a combined 70-26 in a pair of losses.

Washington Commanders (2-3): Five games into his first season as a starter, Sam Howell has been sacked a league-high 29 times. That he’s still managed to put up 1,349 passing yards (sixth most) tells you about his potential… if only his offensive line could keep him on his feet.

New York Giants (1-4): Add up all five game totals, and the Giants are being outscored by a combined 153-62. New York’s lone loss came by a three-point margin, and on average this club is losing by 18.2 points per game.

AFC WEST

Kansas City Chiefs (4-1): For a team as dominant as the Chiefs, they’ve got a habit of easing up as the game winds down. Kansas City has yet to score a fourth-quarter touchdown, averaging just 1.8 points in the final frame through five games.

Los Angeles Chargers (2-2): Justin Herbert’s prolific arm can erase a lot of defensive faults, but this year’s flaws that side of the ball might be too much for one man to overcome. The Chargers are allowing an average of 299.8 passing yards per game, which ranks them last in the category.

Las Vegas Raiders (2-3): Josh Jacobs was crowned rushing king last year, and yet this season the Raiders sit in the bottom quarter of the league in rushing attempts (115) and second last in both total rushing yards (357) and average yards per carry.

Denver Broncos (1-4): The Broncos are giving up a league-worst 450.6 total yards per game, ranking last in points allowed per game (36.2).

NFC WEST

San Francisco 49ers (5-0): Brock Purdy is making quarterbacking look easy as 1-2-3 — fitting, considering his 123.1 passer rating is the best in the league right now. His No. 1 weapon, league rushing leader Christian McCaffrey, is playing near-perfect football, too. He’s tallied more yards as an individual (510) than 15 teams have by committee, and with an average of 102 yards per game is on pace to blow away his previous career highs by a mile.

Seattle Seahawks (3-1): Rookie Devon Witherspoon isn’t wasting time jumping into fan-favourite territory among the 12s. He’s allowed just 11 catches on 22 targets for one score against, and put on a show Week 4 against the Giants with an incredible 97-yard pick six.

Los Angeles Rams (2-3): Rookie receiver Puka Nacua leads the league in receptions (46) and sits second only to Miami’s Tyreek Hill in yards (572).

Arizona Cardinals (1-4): The Cardinals have put up some tough fights this season, but can’t close things out. Arizona has scored the fewest fourth-quarter points this year (1.4).

AFC NORTH

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2): Two years after his 22.5-sack season, T.J. Watt has eight sacks through five games already and is on pace for his strongest year yet.

Baltimore Ravens (3-2): Despite injuries starting to pile up early, the Ravens’ defence has locked down opposing offences, allowing the second-fewest points (15 — tied with Cleveland) and averaging just a single touchdown against per game.

Cleveland Browns (2-2): The Browns have opposing passing games on lockdown, limiting offences to a league-low 125 yards through the air per contest.

Cincinnati Bengals (2-3): After being shut out in the Bengals’ first four contests of the season, star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase scored more touchdowns in Week 5 (three) than his team managed in the first four games of the season combined. (*Whispers*… Are the Bengals back?)

NFC NORTH

Detroit Lions (4-1): The Lions finished strong last season, and they know how to start strong in 2023. The team leads the league in first-quarter points (averaging nine), having scored at least one touchdown in the first frame of four of their five games.

Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2): Trevor Lawrence is processing the game quickly — he has the second-fastest release time in the league right now behind Tua Tagovailoa — and is quick on his feet, too. His 132 rushing yards so far has him on pace for his heaviest rushing season yet.

Indianapolis Colts (3-2): Rookie QB Anthony Richardson has been dynamic, but his pass protection has not. Five games into his rookie season, Richardson’s already been sidelined twice and after suffering an ankle injury in Week 5 looks like he’ll miss significant time.

Atlanta Falcons (3-2): Despite boasting a young core of receiving weapons, Atlanta’s offence lacks the explosivity we all expected. Rookie running back Bijan Robinson, however, is living up to the hype — he has the team lead in rushing, receptions, and touchdown catches (2).

New Orleans Saints (3-2): After recording just five interceptions in 2022, the Saints already have seven in five games this season — that ties them with the Cowboys for second most — and all seven picks have come from different defenders.

Carolina Panthers (0-5): First overall pick Bryce Young is averaging just 5.2 yards per pass attempt, which is the lowest among all NFL starters this season. He’ll have plenty of time to find his game, if only Carolina could find him some more weapons.
